The Bodrum peninsula

Bodrum is both a town and a whole peninsula reaching out into the Aegean towards the Greek island of Kos. The town, ancient Halicarnassus, is built around a harbour guarded by the Castle of St Peter, which today houses the Museum of Underwater Archaeology. Little remains of the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, but its site can still be visited. Around town the bars, the marina and the white cubic houses climbing the hills set the tone for the rest of the peninsula: relaxed by day, sociable by night.

Two coasts, two characters

The peninsula's north coast – Yalıkavak, Türkbükü, Gölköy, Gündoğan and Torba – has calmer, greener bays with wooden piers, smart beach clubs and slightly cooler water. The south and west – Bitez, Ortakent, Turgutreis, Akyarlar and Gümüşlük – offers more sandy beaches, mandarin gardens, steady winds for windsurfing and some of the best sunsets in the Aegean. Old stone windmills on the ridges are a reminder of how constant the breeze is here.

  • Yalıkavak: superyacht marina, designer boutiques and sea-view luxury villas.
  • Türkbükü and Gölköy: jet-set beach clubs on wooden platforms, or a quieter family version next door.
  • Gümüşlük: fish restaurants on the water and Rabbit Island, reachable on foot across a shallow strip.
  • Bitez and Ortakent: sandy beaches and gentle water, ideal for children.
  • Turgutreis and Akyarlar: sunsets, a marina, a Saturday market and kitesurfing bays.
  • Torba: the closest villa area to the airport, on a calm bay.

When to visit

The season runs from May to October, with July and August the busiest months. Because Bodrum faces the Aegean, the sea is a little cooler than on the Mediterranean coast – around 24–25 °C in August – and the summer meltem breeze takes the edge off the heat. June and September are excellent for couples and for anyone who prefers quieter beaches; a villa with a heated pool extends the swimming season into spring and autumn.

Getting there

Milas-Bodrum Airport (BJV) is about 36 km from Bodrum town, a drive of around 35–40 minutes. Torba is the nearest villa area at roughly 30 minutes, while Yalıkavak, Türkbükü and Turgutreis are 45–55 minutes away. Dolmuş minibuses link the villages, but a hire car makes it much easier to explore different bays.

Choosing a villa in Bodrum

Villas listed on Villora include contemporary hillside homes with infinity pools facing the sunset, family villas in mandarin gardens close to sandy beaches and secluded properties with pools hidden from view. Decide first whether you want to walk to a beach and restaurants or prefer peace and a view – the peninsula offers both, often only a few kilometres apart. Each listing shows its VillaNo and tourism permit number (Turizm Belge No), and you contact the owner directly to ask questions or arrange your stay.

Which part of Bodrum is best for families?
Bitez, Ortakent and Gündoğan are popular with families in Bodrum thanks to their sandy or calm, shallow beaches and relaxed village feel. Gölköy is a quieter, family-friendly alternative to neighbouring Türkbükü.
Is the sea in Bodrum cold?

Can I rent a secluded villa with a private pool in Bodrum?

How do I check that a Bodrum villa is licensed?
Short-term holiday lets in Türkiye have required a Ministry of Culture and Tourism permit since 1 January 2024. Every Bodrum villa on Villora displays its Turizm Belge No, which for Muğla starts with 48.
