A village made for villa holidays
Kalkan began life as a Greek fishing village, and its old quarter still has whitewashed and stone houses, narrow lanes and bougainvillea spilling over the walls. The small harbour is the heart of the village, surrounded by rooftop terrace restaurants with views across the bay. Unlike larger resorts, Kalkan has no big hotels dominating the seafront; instead, the hillsides around the bay are dotted with private villas, many with infinity pools that seem to merge into the sea below.
The atmosphere is relaxed and fairly upmarket. Evenings are spent dining on a terrace as the lights come on around the bay, while days revolve around the pool, the beach clubs and trips along the coast.
Beaches and beach clubs
Kalkan's coastline is mainly rocky, and much of the swimming happens from beach clubs with sun decks and sea platforms. Options include:
- Kömürlük, the pebble town beach on the west side of the harbour
- The beach clubs of Kalamar bay and along the coast below Kışla
- Kaputaş, the famous turquoise cove about 7 km away towards Kaş
- Patara, around 20 km away, with 18 km of golden sand and dunes
Areas of Kalkan
Each part of Kalkan has its own character. Ortaalan and Kömürlük are within walking distance of the old town and harbour. Kışla and Kalamar offer panoramic bay views and easy access to beach clubs, while Akbel is quieter with modern villas a few minutes' drive from the centre. Higher up, İslamlar and Bezirgan are cooler mountain villages with large gardens and real privacy.
Choosing your villa
Most villas in Kalkan are built to take advantage of the views, so sea-view terraces and infinity pools are the norm rather than the exception. Couples and honeymooners often choose a smaller villa close to the old town, while families and groups tend to look for larger properties with several bedrooms and plenty of outdoor space. Kalkan also has a good choice of secluded and conservative villas, with pools and terraces screened from neighbours, which are popular with Turkish and Middle Eastern families. Many villas are on steep hillsides, so if walking matters to you, check the distance and the climb back up before contacting the owner.
When to visit
The season runs from May to October. July and August are hot, typically 30–35 °C, and the sea warms to around 27–28 °C. May, June, September and October are pleasant for walking the Lycian Way, visiting Patara and Xanthos, or simply enjoying a quieter village. A heated pool makes early and late-season stays more comfortable.
Getting there
Dalaman Airport (DLM) is about 120 km away, roughly 1 hour 45 minutes by car. Antalya Airport (AYT) is about 230 km away, around 3 hours 30 minutes. A hire car is helpful for exploring the coast, though villas close to the centre can be enjoyed without one.
Every villa listed on Villora shows its VillaNo and its tourism permit number (Turizm Belge No), so you can check the licence before getting in touch with the owner.
