A hammam of your own

A villa hammam is a compact version of the classic Turkish bath. At its centre is the göbek taşı, a heated marble platform where you lie back and let the warmth work. Around the walls are kurna basins with hot and cold taps; you pour the water over yourself with a small bowl. Once warmed through, you scrub with a kese mitt to remove dead skin, then finish with a rich soap-foam wash. In a villa you set the timing and the company, with no queues or shared changing rooms.

A private hammam is a lovely extra for couples, families and friends who want to unwind after a long walk on the Lycian Way or a day out on a boat. In the cooler months it becomes the warmest corner of the house.

What to ask the owner

  • How is the hammam heated: a boiler, electric heater or underfloor heating?
  • How long does it take to heat up, and who switches it on?
  • Is use of the hammam included, or is there a separate charge?
  • Are a kese mitt, foam soap and peştemal towels provided?
  • Is there also a sauna or steam room?
  • Can a local attendant be arranged for a traditional scrub and foam?

Regions and season

Hammams appear in larger, well-equipped villas in Kalkan, Kaş, Fethiye and Bodrum. In high summer most guests use the hammam in the evening. It really comes into its own in spring, autumn and winter, but not all villas rent off-season, so check your dates early.

Renting with confidence

Villora does not take bookings; owners set prices and any extras. Check the VillaNo and Tourism Permit number on the listing, and get hammam terms and charges confirmed in writing.

Frequently asked questions

How do I use a villa hammam?
Warm up on the göbek taşı, pour water from the kurna, then scrub with a kese and finish with a foam wash. Ask the owner how to heat it and how long it takes.
Is there an extra charge for the hammam?
Some owners charge separately for heating the hammam. Confirm this in writing before you book.
Can children use the hammam?
It is a hot environment, so children should only use it briefly and with an adult. Check the house rules with the owner.
Is a hammam villa the same as a spa villa?
Not exactly. Hammam villas have a private Turkish bath; spa villas have at least one of a sauna, hammam, steam room or massage room.
