Holiday Villas with a Saltwater Pool
A saltwater pool still uses chlorine, but it is generated steadily from dissolved salt, so the water tends to feel softer and smell far less of chemicals. Browse villas with salt-chlorinated pools and contact the owners directly.
How a saltwater pool works
A saltwater pool is not filled with seawater. A small amount of salt is dissolved in the water and a chlorinator uses electrolysis to turn it into chlorine. The pool is therefore still sanitised with chlorine, but because it is produced continuously and in smaller doses, many swimmers notice less of the sharp smell, fewer red eyes and a silkier feel on the skin. The salt level is far lower than the sea, so the water tastes only faintly salty, if at all.
It is a comfortable choice for children who spend all day in the water, guests with sensitive skin or anyone who dislikes that typical pool smell. Just don't treat it as a health treatment: it is simply a gentler way of keeping water clean, and how it feels varies from person to person.
Questions to ask the owner
- Is the pool genuinely salt-chlorinated, or a conventional chlorine pool?
- How often is the pool serviced, and who looks after the water?
- Can the pool be heated, and is there an extra charge?
- What are the dimensions and depth, and is there a shallow end?
- Is there a pool fence or alarm if you are travelling with small children?
Where and when
You will find saltwater pools among villas in Kalkan and Kaş, around Fethiye and Ölüdeniz, and in Bodrum. June to September is prime swimming time, with July and August the hottest months. For spring or late autumn stays, ask whether the pool is heated.
