What “private pool” means

A private pool belongs to the villa you rent and is used by your group alone. Unlike complex or shared pools, there are no other families, neighbours or day visitors. You decide when to swim, when it is quiet and when the children can splash around all afternoon.

Where you will find them

In Kalkan and Kaş most villas are built on hillsides, so pools usually sit on terraces with views over the Mediterranean. Around Fethiye, especially in Hisarönü, Ovacık and the village of Islamlar, villas tend to have larger gardens with the pool set among olive and citrus trees. In Bodrum, areas such as Yalıkavak and Gündoğan are known for contemporary villas with generous pools, while Belek and Side in the Antalya region offer flat plots and spacious gardens.

What to check before you rent

• Pool size and depth, and whether there is a shallow end for children
• Whether the pool can be seen from neighbouring properties
• How often the pool is cleaned and by whom
• Whether pool heating is available and if it costs extra
• Sun loungers, parasols and pool lighting
